Pharmacy Practice Residencies (PGY1)

The American Society of Health-System
Pharmacists (ASHP) accredited Pharmacy Practice (PGYI) Residency at the
University of Michigan Medical Center is a 12-month program beginning
July 1, 2010. This program accommodates up to five residents and provides
a wide variety of experiences designed to develop practitioners
with knowledge and expertise in clinical pharmacy practice. The program contact person is the Co-Chair of the Residency Advisory Committee John Clark, Pharm.D., M.S., BCPS
Residents participate in clinical,
research, educational and administrative activities. The residency
program is guided by the Residency Advisory Committee which consists
of the program director (Co-Chair), three clinical pharmacists, one
staff pharmacist, the associate director of Pharmacy, a representative of the College of Pharmacy,
and the Ann Arbor VA residency program director.
A competitive stipend is provided.
Each resident receives 10 vacation days, health insurance and
other University amenities. Business days are allotted for attending
the ASHP Midyear Clinical Meeting, the Great Lakes Residency Conference
and other professional meetings. Partial funding for attending
these meetings may be available through the Department of Pharmacy
Services.
Residency Requirements
A research project suitable for
publication must be completed within the residency year.
Research opportunities are available
in conjunction with many of the faculty.
A writing project must be completed in conjunction with a preceptor. This
comprehensive review project is suitable for publication in refereed journals.
Residents also present seminars throughout
the year. Topics include resident research projects and therapeutic
reviews. These high quality conferences enhance the resident's
communication skills. Some conferences qualify as American Council
on Pharmaceutical Education (ACPE) approved continuing education
programs.
Teaching is another requirement of the Residency program.
Residents are the instructors for a one-semester patient monitoring
course for third year Pharm.D. students. In addition, precepting
of clerkship students is required. The residents receive faculty
appointments at the College and may be assigned other primary
teaching responsibilities.
Residents provide additional service to the department through staffing
in the inpatient pharmacies and the pharmacokinetics service.
The resident will complete a total of 10 monthly clinical experiences throughout the year.
PGY1 residents are required to complete the following rotations:
adult internal medicine, ambulatory care, drug information, management and pediatrics. Residents may select
from a variety of clinical settings for the remainder of their rotations.
Rotations
A one month orientation period will
introduce the resident to the University, College and Medical
Center. During this time period, residents learn to combine distributive
services with participation on a clinical service of their choice.

In addition, elective rotations
are available at the nearby Veterans Affairs Medical Center.
