Current Residents for 2009/2010

Megan Barnes, Pharm.D. (PGY2-Cardiology)

Dr. Barnes, originally from Blue Knob, PA received her Doctor of Pharmacy degree from Duquesne University in May 2008. She completed her Postgraduate Year One (PGY1) Pharmacy Practice at Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh, PA and is currently completing her Postgraduate Year Two (PGY2) Cardiology Specialty Residency at the University of Michigan Health System. She is also actively involved with the University of Michigan College of Pharmacy, serving as a preceptor for fourth-year pharmacy students on clinical rotations as well as a classroom facilitator for third-year pharmacy students. Dr. Barnes' research for this year will focus on continuous infusion loop diuretics in heart failure patients. Upon completion of this PGY2 residency, Dr. Barnes plans to pursue a cardiology clinical specialist position at an academic medical center.

Stephanie Baringhaus Edwin, Pharm.D. (PGY2-Critical Care) (sbaringh@med.umich.edu)

Dr. Edwin, a lifelong resident of Michigan, received her Doctor of Pharmacy degree from Wayne State University in April, 2008. After completing a pharmacy practice residency at the University of Michigan, she is excited to be staying on for another year to complete a critical care specialty residency. Although Dr. Edwin can often found troubleshooting cardiovascular issues while in the intensive care unit, she enjoys the challenges associated with caring for a wide variety of critically ill patients. Dr. Edwin has a strong interest in clinical research. This year, her research endeavors will focus on the pharmacokinetics of enoxaparin in obese patients and mortality associated with septic shock. In addition to her clinical responsibilities, Dr. Edwin is involved with the University of Michigan College of Pharmacy, serving as a preceptor for fourth year pharmacy students on clinical rotations as well as a classroom facilitator and lecturer for third year pharmacy students. Ultimately, Dr. Edwin hopes to secure a position which will allow her to optimize the care provided to critically ill patients while serving as a mentor to students and residents interested in critical care.

Anna Sutherland, Pharm.D. (PGY2-Oncology) (asutherl@med.umich.edu)

Dr. Sutherland received her Bachelor of Science degree in Biology in May 2004 from the University of Michigan and her Doctor of Pharmacy degree also from the University of Michigan in May 2008. She completed a Postgraduate Year One (PGY1) Pharmacy Practice Residency at the University of Michigan Hospitals and Health Centers in 2009. She is currently the Postgraduate Year Two resident specializing in Hematology and Oncology pharmacy. Dr. Sutherland remains actively involved with the University of Michigan College of Pharmacy by serving as an adjunct clinical faculty member. Her teaching responsibilities include precepting fourth-year pharmacy students on clinical rotations as well as serving as a classroom facilitator and lecturer for third-year pharmacy students. This year, Dr. Sutherland's research commitment involves assessing the newly implemented Pharmacist Managed Chemotherapy-Induced Anemia Clinic. Upon completion of this PGY2 residency, Dr. Sutherland plans to pursue a position at an academic medical center associated with a college of pharmacy where she can provide clinical services, both inpatient and outpatient, as well as serve as a clinical faculty member.





Melissa Carroll, Pharm.D. (PGY1)

Dr. Carroll, originally from Richmond, VA received her Bachelor of Arts degree in Biology from the University of Virginia in 2004, spent a year researching uterine cancer at the University of Virginia, and earned her PharmD from Virginia Commonwealth University in 2009. Melissa is currently a Pharmacy Practice (PGY-1) Resident at the University of Michigan Hospitals and Health System. Her current practice interests include hematology/oncology and infectious diseases. Melissa will be researching the use of the Peptide Nucleic Acid Fluorescence In Situ Hybridization (PNA-FISH) test in the optimization of antifungal therapy at the University of Michigan Hospital and Health System. Upon completion of her PGY1 residency, Melissa plans to pursue a second-year specialized residency. During her free time, she enjoys spending time with her husband, Nate, and dog, Sadie.

Marcy DelMonte, Pharm.D. (PGY1) (mtdm@med.umich.edu)

Dr. DelMonte, an Ann Arbor native, received her Bachelor of Arts degree in Biology/Physiology in 2005 from Northwestern University in Evanston, IL and her Doctor of Pharmacy degree from the University of Michigan in May of 2009. She is excited to be completing a Postgraduate Year One (PGY1) Pharmacy Practice Residency in her home town, and anticipates taking on a Postgraduate Year Two (PGY2) Specialty Residency position next year in a yet undecided field. She then plans to seek a position as a clinical pharmacist in a large, academic medical institution where she can simultaneously take part in patient care, teaching and clinical research activities. Marcy's current clinical interests include ambulatory care and critical care, but her research this year will focus on the evaluation of a computer-based intervention to enhance baseline metabolic monitoring in inpatient psychiatry patients treated with second generation antipsychotics. In her spare time, she enjoys reading, hiking, watching movies, cooking, and spending time with family and friends.

Alexander Fohl, Pharm.D. (PGY1) (afohl@med.umich.edu)

Dr. Fohl is originally from Indianapolis, IN and received his Doctor of Pharmacy degree from Purdue University in May, 2009. Currently, he is pursuing a pharmacy practice residency at the University of Michigan Hospitals and Health Centers with practice interests centering on critical care. For his research project, he is determining the stability of 5% N-acetylcysteine oral solution over a period of 30 days. In addition to his clinical responsibilities, he will interact with fourth year pharmacy students on clinical rotations and third year pharmacy students as a classroom facilitator. Upon completion of the pharmacy practice residency, he intends to pursue a specialized residency in critical care with the ultimate goal of obtaining a clinical position at a teaching hospital affiliated with a school of pharmacy.

Rebecca Pettit, Pharm.D., M.B.A. (PGY1) (rebpetti@med.umich.edu)

Dr. Pettit is originally from Cedar Rapids, Iowa. She received her Master of Business Administration in 2008 and her Bachelor of Science in Health Sciences and Doctor of Pharmacy degrees in 2009 from Creighton University in Omaha, Nebraska. She is currently a Postgraduate Year One (PGY1) Pharmacy Resident at the University of Michigan Hospitals and Health Centers. Her current practice interests include pediatrics, cystic fibrosis, and oncology. This year Dr. Pettit's research is focused on evaluating the financial impact of an enoxaparin order set. After completing her PGY1 residency, Dr. Pettit plans to pursue a specialized residency in pediatrics. Ultimately she hopes to obtain a clinical specialist position at an academic medical center. In her free time, Dr. Pettit enjoys golfing, traveling, and spending time with friends and family.
